Abstract
Background: Hyperferritinemias are frequently found in the iron study for the elderly patient with anemia associated diseases. We wanted to evaluate clinical significance of hyperferritinemias.

Methods: Firty eight elderly patients with hyperferritinemia (ferritin > 500ng/mL) between May 2000 and ApÇÇ 2001 at Youngdong Severance Hospit¶° were identified with reviews of medical records.

Results: Hyperferritinemias with decreased serum iron, UIBC and TIBC were found in 8 patients with solid tumors and 17 patients with chronic infection or inflammations. Hyperferritinernias with normal serum iron but decreased UIBC and TIBC were found in 18 patients with chronic renal failure, 3 diabetic patients and 2 patients with blood dyscrasias. Hyperferritinemias with increased serum iron but decreased UIBC and TIBC were found in 3 patients with hemochromatosis or hemosiderosis and 2 patients with chronic liver diseases.

Conc lusion: Hyperferritinemias in the elderly serve as a marker for a variety of clinical conditions and provide insight into the pathogenesis of anemia associated diseases.
